‘Old Home Days’ kicks off Sept. 2

    SHERMAN — Sherman’s Old Home Days are coming Friday, Sept. 2 to Monday, Sept. 5, with a bundle of activities over the four-day period.
    Coinciding with the festival, the Washburn Memorial United Church will celebrate its 150th birthday. Located in Church Street, the church is affiliated with the United Churches of Christ and is currently led by pastor Daniel J. Proulx.
    The church’s birthday will be the theme of this year’s parade, which takes place on Monday, Sept. 5 at 10 a.m. This year’s parade will feature the following Anah Shrine Units — the Highlanders, Indy Cars and Anah’s famous clowns.
    In addition, a book sale will be held at the home of Ina and Jim Pratt Saturday through Monday. Cook books will also be included in the sale.
    The following is a schedule of events for the festival.
Friday, Sept. 2
    Youth Dance at the Sherman Gymnasium from 6-9 p.m. for grades 6-9.
Saturday, Sept. 3
    9 a.m. — Howard Guiggey Memorial Horseshoe Tournament at the VFW Hall. Contact Wayne Guiggey at 365-4832.
    10 a.m. — Bandstand opens with hot dogs and hamburgers, along with a food sale. Also an ATV ride will take place. For more information, call David Robinson at 365-4307.
    2-4 p.m. — Tea at the Red House for ladies of all ages. This event is a fun time to wear a dress, skirt or vintage apparel from 1861. Hats are welcome too. For more information, contact Jarice Kelley at 365-4656.
    5 p.m. — Sherman High School Alumni Banquet at the Sherman gymnasium honoring the classes of 1941, 1951, 1961. A social hour will be held from 4-5 p.m. A dance will follow the banquet, with music provided by the Wildwoods Band.
Sunday, Sept. 4
    7:30-9:30 a.m. — Breakfast at the Masonic Hall.
    9 a.m. — Coed Softball tournament at the Sherman Gym field. Contact Ryan Albert at 942-7316.
    10 a.m. — Church Service at the Washburn Memorial Church. A special presentation on the stained glass windows by the O’Roak family.
    11 a.m. — Bandstand opens with hot dogs, pizza, popcorn and cotton candy.

    12:30 p.m. — Children’s parade, bounce house and other games begin.
    2 p.m. — Contest for 1861 vintage dress.

    4:30 pm. — Chicken barbecue in the park.
    7 p.m. — Variety Show at the Sherman gymnasium. For more information, call 365-4307.
Monday, Sept. 5
    7:30 a.m. — Pumpkin doughnuts on sale at Cap Perrins.

    10 a.m. — Parade begins.
    11 a.m. — Beano begins. Hospitality booth opens. Childrens’ games, bounce tent and rock climbing.

    11 a.m. — Bandstand opens with hot dogs, hamburgers, sausage and french fries.
    11 a.m. — Car Crusin’ in the Village at Tom’s Garage. For more information, call 365-4291.
    Noon — Music in the park.
    1 p.m. — Children’s’ cupcake walk in the park.
