Local Girl Scouts
collecting mittens for those less fortunate
WASHBURN NEWS
by Tomi Henderson
Girl Scouts in the Diamond area which includes Caribou and Washburn are having a collection drive in the near future for mittens.
They will be collected by the end of October and will be used to warm the hands of many local children this winter. Anyone wishing to donate new, home-knit or store-bought mittens is asked to take them to the Washburn Town Office, the Washburn Memorial Library, the mail delivery office at Salmon Brook Estates or phone Christie Cochran at 455-8034 for pickup. Any donations will be appreciated by both the Girl Scouts and the recipients of the mittens.
The history book entitled “150 Years of Memories” is still available and for sale at the Washburn Town Office Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Fridays from 8 a.m. to noon. It will also be available at the Washburn Memorial Library during evenings and Saturdays. The library hours for September are as follows: Mondays, Sept. 12, 19 and 26, from 1 to 7 p.m.; Thursdays, Sept. 8 and 22 from 1 to 7 p.m.; and Saturdays, Sept. 3 and 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
You may also order your books by contacting Londa Brown at www.masad45.net or e-mail ldcole1@roadrunner.com or gramchristie@yahoo.com. You may also phone Christie Cochran at 455-4959 or 551-6979 and leave a message.
The cost of the book is $20 with an additional $5 fee for mailing. All proceeds from the book will go towards the Washburn Mill Pond Project.
This heirloom treasure will make a great Christmas gift as well as being a fine addition to home libraries. The 192-page bound edition covers local events from 1861 to current times, providing an overview of life in Washburn over the past 150 years.
