Tax calendar is set
IN THE CITY
by Deborah Ouellette
Fall has come, school is starting, the weather is changing—-and, of course, taxes are coming due (just a reminder). Here are a few things from the tax calendar that may be of interest to the citizens of Presque Isle.
The interest accrual date for unpaid 2011 real estate and personal property taxes is coming up on October 14, 2011. Interest at the rate of 7.0% starts to accrue on unpaid tax balances on that date. If you pay your 2011 taxes in full on or before October 13, 2011, you will avoid any interest charges on your account.
However, the interest accrual date does not apply if your tax account is enrolled in the City’s tax club. You can continue with regular monthly payments on your account for the remainder of the year without incurring any interest or penalties.
Due to the fact that the mil rate was unchanged in 2011, most tax club accounts did not have any payment adjustment this year. For those few accounts which had a year-over-year tax increase, we recalculated the monthly payment and sent out new tax club coupons to the taxpayers in early August.
If your real estate taxes are escrowed, you may want to confirm with your mortgage company that a disbursement for your 2011 property taxes is scheduled or has already been made. You can also call the Tax/Clerk office at 760-2700 during regular business hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and check on the status of your tax account.
The automatic foreclosure date for unpaid 2009 municipal tax liens is November 7, 2011. Notices will be mailed to taxpayers and parties of interest around mid-September reminding of the statutory automatic foreclosure from the maturing 2009 tax lien. Taxpayers can avoid having the assessed property become tax acquired by paying the tax lien balance in full by the end of the business day on November 7, 2011. Payments postmarked on this date will be considered as timely made.
To all who are interested, the City of Presque Isle 2010 annual report is now available and you can pick up a copy at City Hall during our regular business hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
