Farmers’ Market: A good idea

When “idea people” come up with one, how do they know if it is destined to be a home run or a pop fly straight to the first baseman’s glove?

When members of O’Meara Family Farm came up with the idea of drinkable yogurt bearing their label, they were looking for something tasty and easy to carry that would appeal to customers enjoying “Sunday In The Park,” a music series at Riverside this summer. What they got is rich and creamy with great “mouth-feel” and a generous fruit taste that is satisfying and filling — great for an on-the-go snack or as a welcome addition to a lunch bag. Base hit!

As a mother of four, Christine O’Meara automatically considered nutrition in developing the product. Organic, natural fruit juices, fresh milk, vigorous yogurt culture, fabulous taste — what’s not to love? This makes drinkable yogurt at least a double!

O’Meara’s is a seasonally productive dairy farm. As pasture season winds down, the animals stop milking and will rest and gestate through the winter months waiting for an abundance of green grass and spring calving season to go back into production.

The blend of organic juice and yogurt from these grass-fed cows’ milk turns out to be undamaged by freezing and thawing. This means that the hand-sized bottles will remain available in stores long after Presque Isle Farmers’ Market has closed for the winter. Additionally, it means the fans can pour the product into paper cups with a straw for a handle to make home-made popsicles, but ever so much better. Rounding third!

However, confirmation of a scoring run came from two young ladies visiting the Farmers’ Market with their mother on a recent Saturday morning. When you hear a 9-year-old beg, “Oh please. Can’t we each have one of our own this time?” related to the purchase of something that is actually good for her, you know you have crossed home plate and are headed for a celebration in the dugout. Going … going … gone!
