Referendum questions have Mainers talking … and writing
Harness racing good for state
To the editor:
We need to pass Question 2 to stabilize Maine’s harness racing industry and to make sure that we keep all the jobs that are directly and indirectly related to the horses.
I’ve had horses for more than 25 years, and I have enjoyed every minute of it. I’ve been heavily involved in the leadership of harness racing in our state, and I can tell you that racinos in the southern Maine and Down East will provide a major boost for the industry and the economy.
The Biddeford racino would be built and operated by Ocean Properties, which is owned by Bangor native Tom Walsh and Scarborough Downs. The Passamaquoddy Tribe will build the other racino in Washington County. No one is asking for a handout. All we are asking for is the voters of Maine to allow these companies and the Tribe to move forward with their projects. They would create real jobs for Maine families and would energize the local economies.
We have a great example in Bangor, where they are building a new civic center, in part because of the revenues generated by Hollywood Slots.
Please support jobs, the horsemen and the agricultural industry by voting “yes” on 2.
