Outraged by situation in Orient

To the editor:
As an out-of-state camp owner in Orient, Maine, I have recently become aware of the following:
• Our taxes increased 75 percent in 2008 without warning. This year they are almost doubling, also without warning.
• The decision to raise taxes and set the mill rate this year was held in a secret, unannounced meeting. This is not legal. Taxpayers must be notified and be given a chance for input.
• The tax bill itself is misstated. Bills were received in October 2011 with a due date for payment the month before sent September 2011. How can a due date be before the bill is received?
• The property valuation used to set mill rate was not completed. A valuator did not visit our property. The last valuator to visit was Mary Beth, and she didn’t complete the job.
I am outraged that in this day, our government allows corruption such as this to go on. My family has tried everything to get someone in Augusta to help us with this, but to no avail. I am appealing to you as a newspaper to get this news out and perhaps something may come of it.
