A team of Houlton 5-6 grade boys started their Eastern Maine Basketball League season with a win over Coastal Thunder of Blue Hill, 56-33, last Sunday at the Alumni Gymnasium in Houlton.
According to Houlton coach Paul Cleary, both teams gave a solid defensive effort, along with combatting first-game jitters as both teams missed a few easy shots.
The Houlton boys led 9-2 after the opening quarter and 23-7, as they found their shooting touch in the second period. In the third quarter, Houlton extended its lead, 41-19.
“We [showed] great team play and teamwork, as everyone scored and played,” said Cleary.
Nick Perfitt led the team in scoring with 14 points, followed by Isia Bouchard with a dozen. Cameron Cleary netted 11 points, while Nate Mooers chipped in with seven points. Capping off the scoring were Daniel McNally, six points; Mitchell Turner, four points and Zach Hagan two.
