All 10 troop members were present to rededicate themselves to another year of Girl Scouting. The girls received patches they have earned so far this year and were recognized for the prizes they earned during the fall product sale. Troop members are, from left, front row: Brownies Alexis Getchell and Alexus LaFerriere. Middle row: Brownies Amanda Winslow, Delaney Alward and Sydney Robichaud. Back row: Junior Katelyn Amero, Brownies Madelyn Buzza, Bethany Baker and Jenna Mountain, and Junior Rebecca Rider. The troop is led by Jennifer Buzza, Nancy Winslow and Laurie Amero.
After the Pledge of Allegiance and reciting their Girl Scout Promise and Girl Scout Law, the girls took part in a fun ceremony where they created their very own trail mix. The girls each read a small part about how Girl Scouts are all different in various ways, but show that they care through words and actions and make life-long friendships. The girls each added ingredients to the mix including M&Ms, pretzel thins, marshmallows, various cereals, animal crackers, popcorn, candy chips, goldfish crackers and raisins, with each ingredient related to the part that was read. Each Scout was able to take a bag of their special trail mix home to enjoy.
All of the Scouts received awards that they had earned so far this Scouting year. They each received a Rededication patch and a patch for their tour of the Micmac Museum, called Historically Speaking: Native Americans. Several of the girls received a Be a Reader patch and Address Adventures patch in conjunction with activities they completed during the annual fall product sale. The 10 Scouts were also recognized for the incentive prizes they earned during the magazine and nut sale this fall. To date, five of the troop members have completed the first six of 10 steps to earn a free week at Girl Scout Camp next summer. Their next challenge will be to sell 300 boxes of cookies during the sale this January!
Troop members include Brownies: Delaney Alward, Bethany Baker, Madelyn Buzza, Alexis Getchell, Alexus LaFerriere, Jenna Mountain, Sydney Robichaud and Amanda Winslow. Junior Scouts are Katelyn Amero and Rebecca Rider. The Troop is led by Brownie Leaders Jennifer Buzza and Nancy Winslow, and Junior Adviser Laurie Amero.

Pizza fundraiser
There will be a fundraiser at the Presque Isle and Caribou Pizza Huts Tuesday, Nov. 22 from 3-8 p.m. to benefit the Caring Area Neighbors for Cancer Education and Recovery. Pizza Hut will donate 15 percent of all purchases (with some exceptions) to the local C.A.N.C.E.R. group. Locksmithing student
Mapleton native Isaac Breton has been admitted to the North Bennet Street School in Boston, where he has begun a one-year training program in locksmithing. One of the country’s oldest schools for craftsmanship training, North Bennet Street School is known internationally for its rigorous teaching methods, and for its role in promoting the preservation of traditional crafts skills.
Graduates of the school’s locksmithing program go on to pursue a variety of career paths, from becoming a self-employed locksmith to working as a lock shop supervisor at a major university.
In addition to locksmithing, the school provides full-time and part-time training in violin making, bookbinding, cabinet and furniture making, carpentry, jewelry making and piano technology.
Breton is a 2002 graduate of the University of Maine at Orono and is the son of Dan and Cheryl Breton of Mapleton.
No Mapleton Daze 2012
Over the past 20-plus years, the citizens of Mapleton and the surrounding areas have enjoyed the festivities of the annual Mapleton Daze weekend. Many faithful and dedicated volunteers have given their time and energy to organize this event. Area businesses and individuals have supported this event with their financial donations. Community members have attended auctions and various fundraisers. Each year we have a few new committee members join and each year we have some members retire.
Unfortunately at this time, the committee has not heard from any new committee members willing to join.
Equally unfortunate is the fact that the 2011 committee has decided that it is time to retire. Currently there is no Mapleton Daze committee for 2012. If there are people in the community that are interested in organizing this event the time to act is now. It takes months of preparation and fund raising to pull off the weekend. Mapleton Daze does have a Facebook page that may be useful to help organize those willing to take over. Remember, no person should be criticizing what is or isn’t done in their community unless they are willing to do something themselves.
Youth Choir auction
The Northern Lights Youth Choir will be holding its annual fundraiser auction Friday, Nov. 25 at the State Road Advent Christian Church. Items can be viewed from 5-6 p.m. with the live bidding to begin at 6 p.m. Concessions will also be sold. All proceeds will benefit the Choir’s annual spring concert tour. Come support these talented young people and do a little Christmas shopping!
