On Saturday, the Madawaska boys hosted the Shiretowners. The Shires came away with a 75-39 victory.
Kyle Bouchard was high-scorer with 17 points and Dan Howe scored 14. Kole Buzzeo and Doug Dickison each netted 10 points.
“We played well,” said coach Rob Moran. “We played pretty good defense and I thought we moved the ball very well offensively. We shot the ball well and everyone was very unselfish.”
Moran noted each player stepped up their game and probably played “one of their best games of the year.”
Matt Deschenes and Devan Pelletier each had six for the Owls.
The Shiretowners will meet Stearns at 7 p.m. on Thursday in Houlton.
“We need to play good defense and run the offense,” Moran said. “Offensive execution is something we need to get better at. We are still struggling somewhat with that.”
The Shiretowners will play in East Millinocket on Jan. 25 and have five games left on their schedule.
“They are tough games, but certainly games we can win,” Moran added.
Lady Shires split
The Houlton Lady Shires earned a 48-43 win over visiting Fort Kent on Monday in Houlton. The first time the two teams met, Fort Kent won by four points in triple overtime.
The Lady Shires built a nine-point lead over three quarters only to see Fort Kent cut it down to five in the last quarter, as Houlton held off the Warriors.
Marina Cameron hit four 3-pointers to rack up 18 points to pace Houlton’s offense, while Amanda Fogarty netted 10 points and had five assists. Sam Keegan scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds.
For Fort Kent, Sam Carapellucci tossed in 13 points, while Michela Desjardins, Alexis Desjardins and Andrea Nadeau all finished with six points.
The Lady Shires fell to Mattanawcook Academy last Tuesday, 39-23.
Taylor Hawkins scored 12 points, grabbed five rebounds, had six assists and four blocked shots for the Lynx.
For Houlton, Makala Folsom paced her team with six points and Keegan added five.
SACS girls drop two
The Southern Aroostook Lady Warriors dropped two point-worthy matchups to host Central Aroostook on Monday, 56-33 and to visiting Woodland last Friday in Dyer Brook, 51-44.
In Mars Hill, the Lady Panthers grabbed a 15-4 first-quarter lead building it to 32-10 by halftime. In the third, the Lady Panthers continued to roll with a 44-18 advantage.
Vicki McIntyre dropped in 16 points and a finished with a 6-for-7 free throw shooting effort, and six rebounds. Kayla Cushman knocked down 15 points, while Sarah Grass added 10 points and Racheal Grew had nine points and five rebounds. Kayla Cushman also helped on the boards, bringing down six rebounds.
Against Woodland, the Dragons took a 17-7 lead and held a narrow 19-16 halftime advantage. After three, the Dragons remained on top, 33-28.
“We struggled at first with their press,” said SACS coach Harris Tucker. “We overcame it and in the second half, we started breaking the press and matched up well against them. We didn’t lose our composure and we played a better second half.”
For Southern Aroostook, Mataya Hartin scored eight points, while Sable Altvater posted seven and Jessica Tucker added six more.
Taylor Cochran poured in 21 points, while Mallory Roderick netted 15 more for the Dragons.
For Southern Aroostook, Tucker scored 16 points, while Altvater added 12 more.
SACS boys defeat Dragons
In the boys’ game, Southern Aroostook pulled out a 67-50 win behind Jesse Boulier’s game-high 29 points (15 coming in the opening quarter) and Pat Goodall’s double-double, 10 points and 12 rebounds, as they downed Woodland.
Vance Gustin chipped in with five points and 10 rebounds, while Joe Frazier, “who played an all-around game,” according to SACS coach Vaughn Sleeper, finished with six points, six assists and eight rebounds. Cameron Landry, played “a solid point,” said Sleeper, adding seven points for the Warriors.
For Woodland, Damon Lincoln knocked down 12 points and Ryan Lincoln another 11.
The Warriors took a 22-14 lead and expanded it to 37-20 at halftime. In the third, the Warriors built a 51-33 lead en route to the win.
“We moved the ball well and found the open man,” said Sleeper.
The Warriors received support and contribution from bench players — Kaleb Burpee, Justin Nelson, Ryland King and Mason Caron — who each added eight points.
“They gave us good minutes off the bench, along with tough defense,” Sleeper said.
Even though the Warriors defeated Woodland, Sleeper explained his squad still “has a mountain to climb.”
The Warriors were scheduled to play Limestone/MSSM yesterday and will be at home Friday to play undefeated Central Aroostook.
Patriots charge by Katahdin
The Bangor Christian girls came to Stacyville and took home a 51-26 win over Katahdin.
The Patriots were led by Leah Dorman with 12 points and Gabby Melcher with nine more. Adding to the balanced attack were Sam Martin with seven points, while Kate Jones and Sydney Martin each scored six points.
For Katahdin, Megan Merry led the way with 12 points and Delaney Fitzpatrick netted eight more.
Cougars pull out close win
The Katahdin Cougars avenged an earlier season loss to Fort Fairfield by taking a 65-57 victory on Monday in Stacyville.
Colton Bivighouse played “big” pouring in 31 points and grabbing 14 rebounds for the Cougars. Billy Livezey notched 16 points and Braden Cunningham tossed in 11 more.
For Fort Fairfield, Andrew Lewis had 23 points and Austin Bernier 11.
In the boys’ contest Saturday, Katahdin defeated Bangor Christian, 54-50, behind Bivighouse’s 20 points and 12 rebounds. Jesse McNally added 13 points for Katahdin.
For Bangor Christian, Ben Bragg knocked down 13 points and David Peters 12 more.
Last Wednesday, the Cougars held off Schenck, 56-51, for the win.
Wyatt Morse and Livezey teamed up to each score 15 points, while Bivighouse netted 14 more for the winners.
For Schenck, Derrick Tanous tallied 15.
Lady Hawks competitive
The Central Aroostook Lady Panthers narrowly defeated Hodgdon last Friday, 50-45.
McIntyre pumped in 26 points and hauled down seven rebounds, while Cushman tossed in 14 points, Grass had six and Grew four more for CAHS.
For Hodgdon, Mariah Wiley drained seven 3-pointers finishing with 21 points. Jenna Steamer posted 14 points.
The Lady Hawks led 15-14 to open the game, but were outscored by Central Aroostook 11-2 in the second, as the Lady Panthers took a 25-17 halftime advantage. In the second half, Hodgdon cut into the lead, 35-28, but couldn’t overtake their hosts.
Last Wednesday, the Lady Hawks handed visiting Southern Aroostook a 42-26 loss.
Steamer led Hodgdon with eight points and seven rebounds, while rounding out the well-balanced score sheet were: Lacey McQuarrie, seven points and eight rebounds; Wiley and Maya Gardiner each had six points and Haley Gardiner grabbed seven rebounds.
For SACS, Altvater was the lead scorer with 10 points and Tucker added eight.
Viking teams overtaken
On Monday in Easton, the Bears overpowered East Grand, 78-18.
The four-quarter breakdown saw Easton leading all the way, 24-4; 45-12 and 55-14.
Mindy Desmond finished with 20 points and Carla Halvorson added14 more for the winners.
For East Grand, Shaunna Beaudoin led he way with six points, while Chelsea Winiarski, Bethany Lindsey, Jenny Armstrong, Allie McEwen, Elisha Farley and Lauren Morse all had a basket.
Last Tuesday, the Lady Hawks overpowered visiting East Grand, 70-19.
Kim Levesque, H. Gardiner and Wiley all scored 11 points. M. Gardiner and Steamer each chipped in with eight points, while Karissa Harris grabbed 10 boards for Hodgdon.
Beaudoin paced East Grand with 10 points and Armstrong added four.
On Monday night, the Easton Bears rolled by East Grand, 82-12.
Garrett Gray sparked the Bears off the bench with 21 points, while Reid Clark had 20 and Jonah Bacon added a dozen for the winners.
For East Grand, Kenneth Winiarski scored eight points.
Last Tuesday night, the Hodgdon Hawks raced by visiting East Grand, 71-25.
Chris Hudson led Hodgdon with 15 points, while Devin Quint added 11.
For East Grand, Billy Stoddard hit for six points and Alex Brittain chipped in with five.
GHCA girls look for win
In Madawaska, the Owls overpowered Greater Houlton Christian Academy, 50-18.
Leah Gonneville racked up 15 points, while Nicole Cyr tallied 14 and Kelley Dugal added eight points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots.
For GHCA, Olivia Lord had six points.
The game started with Madawaska holding a 9-2 lead and 17-7 halftime advantage. In the third, Madawaska outscored GHCA 27-2 for a 44-9 margin en route to the win.
Last Tuesday, Washburn overtook GHCA, 76-27, at the University of Maine-Presque Isle.
MacKenzie Worcester keyed Washburn with 17 first-half points, finishing the game with 23. Carsyn Koch posted 14 and Carmen Bragg 13 for the winners.
For GHCA, Colby Walker popped in 10 points, while Destinee Neureuther scored eight.
Washburn led 27-4 to start the game and by halftime their lead was 47-11. After three, Washburn had taken a 63-15 lead en route to the win.
