Officials announce patriotic essay winners

Members of the Ladies Auxiliary, Lister/Knowlton VFW Post 9389 held an awards ceremony for their yearly essay contest “What America Means to Me,” on Feb. 16.  Ninety fifth-grade students at Teague Park Elementary School in Caribou participated in the annual program. “The teachers had decorated the fifth-grade hallway in patriotic colors for our ceremony,” said Yvonne Theriault, chairwoman of the essay contest. “We were so pleased that they would do something like that for our ceremony.”

Prior to presenting awards and certificates Auxiliary members presented a brief program on the history of the American flag and instruction on proper flag etiquette.

Students who were selected as the top three essayists receiving a certificate and a monetary award included: Riley McNeal, first place, $25; Madison Jandreau, second place, $15; and Kassie Krul, third place, $10.

Receiving honorable mention for their essays were Logan Malm, Nick Guerrette, Willow Whitten, Noah Hixon, Jacob Ouellette, Brianna Reece and Jordon Theriualt.
