Alexa Massey, a junior at Caribou High School, was recently named the Lister/Knowlton VFW Post 9389 Voice of Democracy essay contest winner.

Massey along with other awardees, was recognized at a dinner and ceremony held March 13 during which she was presented with generous gifts from both the VFW and the Ladies Auxiliary.
The Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen writing contests are nationwide writing contests for middle and high school aged students, respectively. Students answer prompts related to citizenship and democracy, then record their audios as speeches for judging.
Alexa is the daughter of Brian and Shelley Massey of Caribou, and the granddaughter of the late Alonzo Jr. and Joan Keaton, both of whom were life members of the Lister/Knowlton VFW Post 9389 and the Henry B. Pratt American Legion Post 15. Both served and dedicated themselves, serving various offices in each post. Mrs. Keaton was elected to the VFW Auxiliary as well as the American Legion Auxiliary.
Brian Massey won the Voice of Democracy contest for his local school of Grayson County High School in Independance, Virginia, 26 years ago and went on to the regional and state competition levels.
