Television owners, staff deserve thanks

To the editor:

I would like to respond to a recent letter printed regarding our local television station WAGM. I feel compelled to share the wonderful support that Aroostook County has been the recipient of since the inception of “Feed The County.” I hope that people realize that our program would not be where it is today without the support of WAGM.

WAGM has been a co-sponsor of the “Feed The County” campaign for nine years! WAGM-TV and Aroostook Savings & Loan have helped us collect hundreds of thousands of dollars in food and money to help the people of Aroostook County! We do not and have never paid for one cent of the advertising costs to keep our “Feed The County” efforts in the public eye. It has not only brought us the much needed food donations and “stuff” that we need to operate our major fundraisers and the two thrift stores we operate, but it has kept the notion that not all of us have enough to eat out in the open so no one forgets that it is a problem here in Aroostook County as it is throughout the country.

WAGM News has reported hundreds of stories of our efforts, challenges and successes of operating our food bank. I do not know of any other program of Catholic Charities anywhere in the state of Maine or perhaps the country that has such support of a local TV station as we have here at WAGM. I am often the envy of many that we have such wonderful coverage of our success stories. I am told that many stations throughout the country will only report when something goes horribly wrong.

Also, the staff of WAGM have rolled up their sleeves and pitched in to cook hot dogs at MPG’s annual hot dog sale along with me and Aroostook Savings & Loan. Dick Palm donated his time to be our emcee at the Feed The County Summerfest Concert last summer, Kelly Landeen has stood in the rain, the snow, the wind and the occasional 90-degree day alongside of me and Vickie Keaton to collect food along a sidewalk in towns around the County. These are just some of the things that this station has done to help the people of Aroostook County. I’m sure there are more I am not aware of! Pete and Carole Kozloski, owners of WAGM, made a significant donation to the Presque Isle Rotary Club to help us put a roof on our food warehouse a couple of years ago!

These efforts of helping us to Feed The County are not to choose a particular agency but they are helping all of Aroostook County by helping us. We serve pantries throughout the whole county from Wytopitlock to St. Francis and from Fort Fairfield to Ashland and all communities in-between.

I hope people realize, understand and appreciate as I do all that WAGM does and has done for the people of Aroostook County. So from my perspective I thank you WAGM — the station and the people — for all you give to the people of Aroostook County.
