HOULTON, Maine — After a two-year hiatus, the Little Miss and Mr. Sparkler and the Little Miss and Mr. Firecracker Pageant is returning to Houlton.
In the past, the annual agricultural fair had hosted this event, but officials made the decision not to continue due to logistical problems. The Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce is stepping in this year and bringing this popular event back to the area.
Jane Torres, chamber executive director, said the decision to reintroduce the pageant was an easy one.
“The tradition behind the pageants is dear to the hearts of so many Houlton area residents,” she said. “They want to see the little ones in the parade again and they want to have the opportunity to show off their children and grandchildren in a friendly and safe environment. It’s a fun event that has been a part of Houlton 4th of July celebrations for many years. We are pleased and proud to be able to offer the pageant once again”.
This year, the pageant will be incorporated into Tuesday, July 3 Midnight Madness festivities and will be held at the Recreation Center on Main Street. Registration sign-in will be at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday and the event will start at 6 p.m. The Sparkler division is open to boys and girls 2 and under while the Firecracker division is for 3 and 4 year olds. Each child must be accompanied on stage by a parent or guardian. There will be a panel of three judges who will give up to 15 points per child in two categories of personality and appearance.
Each child will receive one registration pass for the pageant so that the other parent not on stage can watch the event. Neither the contestant nor the person on stage with the child will need a pass. Registration forms can be obtained from the Chamber of Commerce at 109 Main St, through the chamber website at houltonchamber.com or one can be mailed to those who call 532-4216. Passes will be given out when the registration form is dropped off or mailed to the Chamber.
