Marie Beckum, director of the 21st Century After-School program for RSU 39 recently accepted a Maine Community Foundation 21st Century $4,450 funding grant to be used to purchase a 20-foot long by 8-foot high climbing wall which will be erected in the Teague Park Elementary School gymnasium, where the after-school program is held. The 21st Century program provides a safe, structured environment for elementary and secondary level students, where they can receive help with school work and participate a variety of academic enrichment activities that complement their regular classroom academic programs. The climbing wall will benefit those attending summer school classes as well as be used by Teague Park elementary students during physical education classes throughout the regular school year. Beckum received the MCF funds from Gregg Collins, vice chair of the Aroostook County Advisers of the Maine Community Foundation. In anticipation of the new installment in their gym, Teague Park students created a large hand-made thank-you note on the wall where the climbing wall will be installed. The Maine Community Foundation awards grant funding focusing on education, non-profit organizations, community and civic projects.
