Island Falls News
Cheryl Sewall Connelly and husband, Peter, have arrived from their home in Florida to spend several weeks at their cottage on lower Mattawam-keag Lake, along with their son, Pete and two grandchildren, Maria and Francis. So far, the weather has been great, but the pesky mosquitoes are still with us.
The Country Music which is every Wednesday at the Snowmobile clubhouse is still going strong and the last Wednesday of the month there will be a potluck supper for all to enjoy. Many people here in the area go to play and sing and also, just to listen and to dance.
The Whittier Congregational Church will be having their annual Trash and Treasure sale on July 28 from 9 a.m. to noon. There will be lots of home-baked goodies also and homemade ice cream to all who come so come and browse around and maybe find a treasure and and enjoy the goodies that will be on sale.
Haven’t seen the fat woodchuck for awhile, but have seen plenty of evidence of the pesky skunks around. Found several new holes they had dug, and despite the mosquitoes that are quite thick, I went out and filled in some of the bigger holes.
The ground is pretty dry now and they must have a hard time digging in that hard ground. Still have the big gray squirrels around and I see them clinging to the bird feeder trying to get the very last birdseed in it. I put very few seeds in to try to feed the small birds before the large critters get it all. A friend just told me that she had recently seen a moose with two calves near her camp, so I am still keeping watch on my big back lawn in case any deer or moose should arrive.
Ricker Rumblings
by Lois Downing
Hello everyone! July is moving right along, mostly at the end. Where does the time go? Sunny here today, with no rain predicted, right away that is. I heard that rain is needed for the crops, so I hope that happens.
The Thursday night band concerts continue to be a source of delight to many. Cooler this last Thursday, so a jacket or sweater was needed. Nice to see the crowds support our community band. Our Paul Armstrong spent a recent night in the local hospital. Paul is home now. His wife, Jeanie, had surgery a few days ago. This family has been hit hard lately, I think.
Shirley Nason’s sister, Ruth, was entertained recently with a ‘’welcome home’’ party at her apartment at Ricker given by family. Ruth has recently returned to Houlton after a long time in Florida. Shirley recently had Leanne, her niece, for a day. Sorry to report that Shirley was in the hospital for several days but is home now and doing well.
Bill Cogswell of New York recently came back to Houlton. He’s staying with Gerry Dunn, his sister, but comes to Ricker Plaza every day to see his other sisters, Norma Bates and Lavina Byron. Bill will be here several weeks so we will be seeing more of him. Welcome back, Bill and may your stay be a happy one.
Several of the Ricker tenants continue to eat together on Friday nights. The menu varies but our hostesses are Barbara Ganem, Diane Richard, Harriet Garnett and Connie Barry. Thanks, ladies. I have a new great-grandson, named Tristan Joseph Carson, born in Rhode Island to Amanda and Joseph Carson.
We want to say ‘’hello’’ to Dot Weston and Lillian Stars, third floor ladies who are elsewhere at this time.
Do you ever wish you could be an angel? You can easily do it. Just help someone in need and never tell a soul about it. The Bible verse for today is taken from Matthew 12:38: “Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to him, ‘Teacher we wish to see a sign from him.’” Have a week of good health and safety.
Take Off Pounds Sensibly ME 0233, Houlton
by Lois Downing
Take Off Pounds Sensibly Chapter 0233 of Houlton met at the Aldergate building on High Street for its Friday, July 20, meeting. Seventeen members were in attendance; five were KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly).
Our leader Diane Folsom was in attendance, as well as Janice Cote, area captain. Janice was in charge of the program. Barbara Grant was loser of the week with Janette Nelson as runner-up. Charlotte Marley spoke about the picnic basket contest, which is currently going on. Joyce Estey and Barbara Grant received bonus points in the contest.
A discussion was held on the t-shirts. Members are asked to please bring an unwrapped gift for the auction next Friday, July 20. Janice’s program was on healthy eating. She showed pictures and we had to decide if they were good or bad. Don’t worry if things get messy; perfection is not possible, she said. Don’t let people tell you what to eat. She answered questions at the end of the program and distributed bookmarks for everyone.
We meet every Friday at 8-8:45 a.m. for weigh-in; the meeting starts at 9 a.m. and usually ends an hour later. If you want more information about the chapter, you can call Charlotte Marley at 757-8483 or Betty Ivey at 532-9652.The next meeting is July 27; come, enjoy and take off weight. You’ll be glad you did.
