LIMESTONE AND LONG LAKE — The 24th annual Charity Challenge Golf Tournament, to benefit Aroostook Special Olympics, was another huge success.
Beautiful weather on July 14 and 15 greeted a record number of golfers for the unique event. The tournament is broken up into four nine-hole tournaments, with prizes awarded after each nine. On Saturday, the event was held at Limestone Country Club. Winners in the morning session were Paul Cary and Janet Monroe from the Bangor area and their teammates Jim Saucier and Carl Ouellette, who finished at 4-under-par. The net winners were Mark Faulkingham, Leeanne Faulkingham, JR Gillis, Kelley Fiztpatrick and Rene Cloukey.
The afternoon tournament winners were Henry Furtek, Roland Perry, Adam Metzler and Mike McNulty and the net winners were Mark Faulkingam, Andre Bouley, JR Gillis and Rene Cloukey.
On Sunday, golfers turned out in record numbers at Long Lake Country Club for the second day of the tournament. Valley Auto in Fort Kent sponsored a hole in one prize on the fifth hole. A 2013 Chevy Malibu was the prize and Darlene Rossignol had the closest shot of the day, ending up six feet from the cup. Ken Fongemie almost earned a $1,000 prize on number nine for an ace, ending up just three inches from the cup.
The team of AJ Cloukey, Shawn Cunningham, Gary Nadeau, Tony Roy and Tom Richard from Presque Isle picked up the title with a six-under score. The net winners were Mike Deschene, Andrew Deschene, Alex Michaud and Darlene Rossignol from the Madawaska/St Agatha area.
Paul Brideau, Louis Moreau, Jim Gagnon and Reno Voisine of Fort Kent posted a six-under to win the afternoon tournament. Net winners were Ty Tracy, Aaron St Pierre, Josh Stackhouse and Ben Goodwin from the Limestone and Washburn areas.
Once again this year Aroostook Special Olympics will receive the proceeds of the tournament. More than $60,000 dollars has been raised for the organization in the history of the event.
