Tour benefits diabetes camp

“Ride Aroostook 2012” will be held on the campus at the University of Maine at Presque Isle Aug. 11 and 12.

This ride follows a tremendously successful inaugural event, which attracted 73 participants who raised in excess of $16,000 for the cause. Ride Aroostook provides a spectacular, fully-supported cycling tour of the beautiful Aroostook countryside.

At the same time, the event helps support Camp Adventure, a one-of-a-kind summer camp for children with Type 1 Diabetes. One hundred percent of funds raised in the ride will be directed to the camp. Over the past 14 years, Camp Adventure has provided a life-changing experience for children with Type 1 Diabetes, and each year children are turned away due to a lack of resources to cover cost of staff and supplies. The camp provides a one-to-one staff to camper ratio and camp registration cost is kept as low as possible so that any child can participate.

In addition to weekend of bike riding, other fun events are being incorporated into the weekend. On Friday, Aug. 10, a wine and cheese reception will start things off right as the Northern Maine Chamber Orchestra provides a soothing accompaniment.

On Saturday afternoon, Aug. 11, up and coming acoustic rock band Mellow Endeavor will be performing in the event tent on UMPI’s campus.

Cary Medical Center has partnered with First Giving to accept online registrations and donations, and to provide each registrant with their own personalized Ride Aroostook fundraising webpage. Those interested can register for the event online at www.ridearoostook.org/event/register/.

Alternatively, you may telephone 207-498-1112 and register for on-site check in.

A special gift and recognition will be provided to Ride Aroostook 2012 Top Fundraisers.

In addition, this year return riders are being offered an incentive to “Bring a Buddy.” If a returning rider refers a new participant who completes registration and raises the minimum pledge requirement, the returning rider will receive a $25 gas card at check-in.

Volunteers are also needed for this event.  More information on Ride Aroostook can be found online at www.ridearoostook.org.
