Library transitions to fall schedule
IN THE CITY
by Lisa Neal Shaw
Summer vacation season had a lot of warm, sunny weather. As school starts back up and campers return home, Mark & Emily Turner Memorial Library welcomes you all home with a variety of programming for all age groups and interests.
Youth Librarian Dianna Leighton will once again work with community organizations to present the highly popular Fairy Festival at Riverside Park on Saturday, Sept. 15, from noon to 4 p.m.
Dianna has been seen swanning about with various constructs of fairy wings and is rising as well to meet popular patron demand for gnome beards. Planned activity stations this year include face-painting, wand-making, quiet story reading, snacks, and more. This festival will also feature the Celtic music and storytelling of Castlebay. The library welcomes and encourages visitors and volunteers for this delightful afternoon of make-believe with the little people. If you would like more information or would like to volunteer to help, please call the library at 764-2571 or e-mail diannaleighton@presqueislelibrary.org.
The library community is also pleased to announce the return of the Turner Adult Book Club. Plans are to have the club meet the first Thursday evening of every other month, beginning on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012, at 6 p.m. The first selection will be Jayber Crow by Wendell Berry. Copies of this book will be available at the library. If you would like to join this discussion group or reserve a copy of the book, please call 764-2571 or e-mail lisanealshaw@presqueislelibrary.org.
Community members who run their own small business or are interested in doing so are cordially invited to talk with IRS educator Shawn Savage via video conference at the library on Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2012, from 9 a.m. until noon. Participants will be able to talk live and ask questions about tax and business regulations from the comfort of the library’s conference room. Community business owners are also welcome to browse and check out materials from the library’s small business section as well as access the Foundation Center Cooperating Collection database of grant-makers. For more information about the video conference or our small business materials, please call 764-2571 or e-mail lisanealshaw@presqueislelibrary.org.
The trustees and staff of the library also remind the community that plans are under way for an interior design project to beautify and make the most efficient use of the library’s new space. Patron input is encouraged. Some things to consider are as follows: Which areas of the library do you use the most? How are the library’s hours and days of services working for you? Which physical areas and programs or services would you like to see emphasized? Your thoughts and ideas are welcome and may be shared by calling 764-2571 or e-mailing Sonja Plummer-Morgan at pimelibrarian@gmail.com.
Finally, we are pleased to note that as overall visits and checkouts of materials at the library are rising, so also is usage of our ebooks and other digital services. Cardholders at Mark & Emily Turner Memorial Library have access to ebooks through Axis 360, which features popular new books purchased just for our own patrons, and through Maine InfoNet Download Library, which is part of a statewide consortium which purchases ebooks for patrons of all participating libraries in Maine. Cardholders with mobile devices running iOs or Android also have remote access to EBSCOhost, a database containing full-text articles from over 2,000 journals ranging from industry-specific titles to popular periodicals such as Scientific American and Consumer Reports. If you have any questions about accessing these resources, please call 764-2571 or e-mail lisanealshaw@presqueislelibrary.org.
We thank you all for another year of your support and patronage. We look forward to continuing to bring you more services, programs, and popular content in a variety of formats most convenient to you.
