CARIBOU — Caribou police officers have been operating safety checkpoints on Routes 1, 89 and 161 and the checkpoints will continue being held through the Labor Day weekend.
Caribou Police Chief Michael Gahagan explained that the checkpoints will ensure all motor vehicles, drivers and passengers are in compliance with State of Maine laws and to make sure the roads are safe for traveling motorists this holiday weekend.
“Officers will be checking for proper seatbelt use, adequate exhaust and tires, violations of inspections and registration laws, sobriety and other safety-related issues,” Gahagan stated.
The checkpoints are being held in conjunction with the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety and the 2012 High Visibility Impaired Driving Enforcement Campaign.
