PT Joseph Edwards   American Flag Color ISLAND FALLS – Joseph Walker Edwards died Sept. 18, 2012, at his home. He was born July 23, 1922, in Dyer Brook, son of William and Melvina (Rockwell) Edwards.
    He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps serving in the 8th Air Force 466 Bomb Group during World War II. He was a ball gunner and tail gunner on a B-24. He flew 30-35 missions over Germany in three years of service. He grew potatoes for a year. He ran Birch Point Campground for many years, retiring in 1984 when the business was taken over by his sons. During his career he built a bowling alley, started the campground, tried his luck with a rope tow ski area, during the 70s he rented out 30 fishing shacks and built the present lodge in 1955. He also worked with his wife at the old Dance Pavilion.
    He was a charter member of Island Falls Lake Association, was active in Big Valley Snowsled Club and was a member of Island Falls Lodge No. 206 AF & AM.
    He is survived by three sons, Scott and wife, Sue, of Bangor, and their children, Hilary and Gregory, Steve and wife, Andrea, of Island Falls, and their children, Drew and Logan, and Joey and wife, Mellissa, of Island Falls, and their son, Connor; sister, Julia Tidd of Chuluota, Fla.; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, Delma (Noyes); parents; and brothers, Ralph, Danny, Shepard, Lawrence, William and Keith. The family extends a special thank you to his caregivers.
    Friends called 11 a.m.-noon Friday, Sept. 21, at Bowers Funeral Home, Sherman Street, Island Falls, where funeral services began at noon conducted by Island Falls Lodge No. 206.
