Community Arts Center hires Wells

HOULTON — The Houlton Community Arts Center Board of Directors recently hired their first employee, Kristen Wells, as managing director of Houlton Community Arts Center. Daughter of Arthur and Mim Sloat of Hodgdon, Wells recently relocated back to the area from Windham with her husband, David, and their three young daughters. She is a graduate of University of Southern Maine with a bachelor’s degree in art and received her master’s certification in arts administration from Boston University.
Most recently, Wells was the director of development at Catholic Charities Maine. With experience in fundraising, nonprofit management and the arts, Wells will work to build awareness for creative arts in the Houlton area and enhance the potential of the Houlton Community Arts Center.

Houlton Community Arts Center has been a volunteer organization since it began in 2002. With the generosity of the community, more than $1.2 million was raised to support the renovation of the auditorium, cafeteria, and auditorium entrance of Houlton High School, completing the first of a two-phase plan.
Phase II includes a 13,000 square foot addition designed to deal with a number of issues that currently challenge the music and arts department and limit the potential of the existing space: overcrowding, noise pollution and storage. The new addition will provide separate rehearsal spaces for vocal and instrumental music classes, a theater and dance classroom, and a visual arts classroom.
“I am thrilled to be back in the County” Wells said. “I think it’s great that I moved away from home to find the arts and have returned for the same reason. Working with Houlton Community Arts Center is a great opportunity and I am excited to see what we can accomplish together.”
The Houlton Community Arts Center works in conjunction with Houlton High School and community groups to provide a venue to benefit arts and culture in the community.
