Cub Scout happenings

The new year of Cub Scouts officially began Sept. 14 with five new young men joining the Pack. They are Blake Vincent, Andrew Dotson, Daniel Higgins and Shaun Cowett, all Tigers, and Tyler Knight (Wolf). The Scouts’ first job will be to earn their Bobcat badges. Welcome to the Pack boys! Returning Scouts are as follows: Graham Berry (Webelo II), Creed Chasse, Blayne Boutot, Gabe Page and Emmit Rushinal, all Webelo I, Dane Driscoll, Clark Condon, Alex White, Eli Walker, Caleb Cray and Dakota Sutherland, all Bears, and Brady Cowett (Wolf).

Pack 179 had a busy second part to the Scouting year and the following list just skims the surface of all the activities that they did. In March, many traveled to Easton and in April to Fort Kent for organized Scouting fun with other Packs from the North Star District. In May, the Scouts presented new flags to VFW Commander Dennis Beaulier to replace the ones that were worn at the Veterans’ Memorial on Main Street, they sold poppies with 100 percent of the proceeds going back to the VFW, as well as marched in the Memorial Day parade.

Wolves (grade 2) earned their fishing belt loops, and several Scouts from grade levels 1-4 earned their good manners belt loops during a Pack meeting. On the last day of school, the Pack went to Gentile Hall at the University of Maine at Presque Isle and did rock wall climbing and swimming. They enjoyed the outing so much that they insisted we do it again next year. Afterwards everyone enjoyed a great meal at Pizza Hut.

Also in June, the Pack, with the help of the town of Ashland, was able to have a flagpole installed at the Ashland Public Library. The flag was purchased by the Pack on behalf of Ashland VFW Post 9699 to honor Ashland veterans, both living and deceased. On June 30, the Scouts had their official year-end activities starting at the Ashland Trotting Park and ate food that was prepared in the Dutch oven. Due to inclement weather, the Scouts had to camp-in at the VFW, but it was lots of fun with popcorn and a movie for entertainment that evening and then pancakes for breakfast and a great skit put on by the Wolf den the next morning.

Over the summer, some of the Scouts continued with Scouting activities such as Cub Scout Day Camp and the Ashland Summer Fest Parade. Clark Condon, Dane Driscoll, Eli Walker and Dakota Sutherland all earned their Summertime Pack Award for completing three Scouting events during the months of June, July and August. Congratulations fellas!

As always, if anyone in the community is interested in becoming involved with Cub Scouts, please contact Cub Scout Master Julie Berry for more information at 435-7137. You do not have to have a child enrolled in Scouts to participate and everyone has a talent or skill that would be beneficial to share with our local youth.
