CARIBOU — To coincide with the holiday season, a Caribou family has an extra-special reason to celebrate and be thankful with the birth of a new baby girl who had the distinction of being the 200th delivery at Cary Medical Center in 2012.
Samara Elise Bouchard was born at 7:34 p.m. on Nov. 20 to Matt and Kerry Bouchard, and sister Alexis, of Caribou. The birth is a true milestone for Cary, as the hospital has not had 200 births since 1995.
The baby girl weighed 8 pounds 12 ounces and was 21.5 inches long.
Dr. Brian Wall, senior obstetrician and gynecologist with Pines Health Services, and Bonnie Bouchard, Pines certified midwife, performed the delivery. Dr. Wall said that the 200th delivery represents a major achievement for both Cary and Pines.
“Our obstetrical practice has seen linear growth over the last dozen years, and this has accelerated even more over just the last several years,” said Wall, who will mark 14 years with Pines and Cary in January. “This has occurred as a result of several factors. We have a stable, highly trained obstetrical team, from nurses to pediatricians to our obstetrical providers. This is further complemented by a highly supportive administration that is proactive in helping us accomplish the goal of providing the highest quality of care,” Wall continued. “Significant effort has gone into accomplishing this mission from everyone involved. We realize that while many individuals are involved, it is ultimately a team effort. We understand it is a privilege to serve our community.”
Cary Medical Center and Pines Health Services collaborated on the opening of the Center for Women and Children’s Health in 1999. Wall came to Cary at that time and was an integral part of the plan for the new center. The Jefferson Cary Foundation launched a major capital campaign for the project, which raised $500,000. Cary’s CEO Kris Doody, RN said that the commitment to create a comprehensive center and support the growth of the OB service was an organizational-wide effort.
“Cary has a tradition of delivering babies that goes back almost 90 years,” said Doody, who began her work as CEO in 1999. “We are a family-centered organization and childbirth is a very special part of who we are as a hospital. We truly have an exceptional and collaborative partnership with Pines and a high-quality nursing service for maternal and child care. We are thrilled and honored by families throughout our service area who choose Cary as the birthplace for this life-changing experience.”
The 200th baby for 2012 received some special gifts from the Cary Medical Center Auxiliary and the hospital.
Head Nurse on the Maternal Child Unit Jen Plante, RN said that the level of care provided by the OB staff is at an extraordinary level.
“We are very proud of our nursing staff here on the Maternal Child Unit,” said Plante. “Our patient satisfaction surveys give us a five-star rating, and this demands our best efforts,”
Plante also noted that the growth in the variety of delivery options at Cary has also attracted expecting couples.
“We have really seen some great advancement in the entire birthing process at Cary over the years,” Plante said. “From two home-like birthing rooms with birthing beds to the option of a water birth, our obstetrical team has really sought to respond to the desires of their patients. We also provide both epidural and intrathecal anesthesia, and we have a rooming-in program for new dads and siblings. We strive to make the entire birthing experience focused on the patient, the family and the newborn.”
Cary also offers free childbirth education classes and provides child car seat training for new parents and grandparents.
While the staff at Cary was excited about the 200th delivery, there is still a full month to go in 2012, and the hospital expects several more deliveries before the year is out.
