Editor’s note: The following article is a synopsis written by staff members and volunteers of the Cary Public Library highlighting one of the suggested reading books, as determined by their staff.
Ever hear of 12 kinds of ice? Mainer Ellen Bryan Obed’s new book “Twelve Kinds Of Ice” details her childhood experiences in a touching text with darling pencil drawings by Barbara McClintock. Beginning with the transparent ice on the animal drinking pails through a neighborhood backyard skating rink complete with an ice show (plus a lemon pie!!) to the spring thaw, this book is a treasure of children’s winter fun.
Remember the thin ice on the ground of the playground when we would line up and take turns skating the short patch with just our boots on? Then some mean teacher would say, “Get off the ice before someone falls and breaks their neck!” We had so many clothes on there was no way to “break” anything!
This is a new book just waiting for someone to dedicate it for the nominal fee of $10 during this Christmas Season, getting your name on a snowman in the front lobby. Happy reading!
