FORT FAIRFIELD – Louise Hoyt Findlen passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on Sunday, December 9, 2012, at her home in Fort Fairfield with her family by her side. She was born February 16, 1922, and was lovingly raised in Easton by her parents, Henry and Grace (Folsom) Hoyt.
After graduation from Easton High School and the University of Maine, she married Joseph Peter Findlen on October 14, 1944, at Camp Roberts in California while her new husband was in transit to the war in the Philippines. She taught school in Mapleton. In 1947, they moved to their lifelong home in Fort Fairfield to farm and raise eight children. They danced and played bridge as often as they could. Louise knew how to live life to the fullest. She walked and ate healthy food all her life. She traveled extensively with Joe, seeing Russia and Europe as well as the North American continent. They went to Broadway as often as they could persuade Grammy Hoyt to care for the eight children. After the children had grown, Louise took additional college courses and was an avid reader. She was an active board member of the Fort Fairfield Public Library. She participated in group study classes for many years. At the age of 62 she parasailed in Mexico, and when she was 89 went for rides with her son Joe in his powered parachute. Most of all she enjoyed being with her family. After her beloved husband passed away in 1990, Louise spent her remaining years living in the house – or rather hotel. With eight children and their families who enjoyed visiting her, the big farmhouse came in very handy.
Louise was predeceased by her husband, Joseph; her parents, Henry and Grace Hoyt; her brother, John Hoyt and his wife, Charlotte.
Louise is survived by her eight children and their spouses, Joseph H. and Helen of Presque Isle, Patrick and Anita of Clifton, Michael and Judy of Lecanto, Fla., Marcia and Van Cyr of St. Joseph, Mich., Frederick and Audrey of Pownal; Richard and Kathari of Houlton, Christopher and Nancy of Windham, Gregory and Gayle of Dade City, Fla. She is also survived by her sister. Pauline Hoyt Marquis and her husband, Gordon of Upton, Mass., as well as 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, December 22, 2012, at 1 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 166 Main St., Fort Fairfield, with Rev. Kevin Kinsey officiating. Spring interment will take place at the St. Denis Catholic Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments will be held at the VFW Paul Lockhart Post Number 6187, Presque Isle St., Fort Fairfield, immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs. Findlen’s memory to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, Virginia 22312 or the Fort Fairfield Public Library, 339 Main St., Fort Fairfield, 04742. Envelopes will be available at the church.
