HOULTON, Maine — Northern Maine Community College will host an informational session in Houlton on Thursday, Jan. 3, for area residents interested in learning about options for higher education and training. The college information night will take place at the Houlton Higher Education Center, 18 Military St. from 3 to 7 p.m.
The event is designed for members of the public who are interested in learning more about the college and the various courses, certificate and associate degree programs offered locally through the center in southern Aroostook County and on the Presque Isle campus.
The college is introducing two new programs — the entrepreneurship certificate level program and the Health Information Technology program. The entrepreneurship program prepares students to launch new ventures by focusing on the fundamentals of starting their own business. For those who already have an established business, the program is designed to strengthen business and management skills.
The Health Information Technology program is for those already involved in or those considering joining the growing field of patient information management. These technicians collect health data and manage enhanced coding while maintaining confidentiality and security in paper and electronic systems. Graduates of this program may find employment in hospitals, physician offices, home health agencies and more.
In addition to information on programs offered at the College, Info Night attendees will be able to learn more about financing their education and about financial aid that is available to many students. A recent cost comparison showed NMCC offers the lowest public higher education tuition rates in the state of Maine at $86 per credit hour. As a further incentive, NMCC will waive the registration fees for those who do not enroll in a program but sign up for individual courses.
“Info Night provides a convenient opportunity for community members to learn what the College has to offer and to see how easily class offerings can work into most schedules,” said Otis Smith, director of NMCC’s off-campus center in Houlton. “Over the years, many individuals have found success at NMCC, and subsequently in the workforce, because they took the first step and attended our Info Night.”
NMCC officials encourage people who have been out of school for many years to consider the benefits of returning in order to advance their careers or job prospects. The College Info Night is tailored to each individual who attends. Participants can walk in at any time between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. for a one-on-one session with an NMCC representative.
