On Thursday, April 6, the Washburn ATV Club had their first club meeting with many new faces in attendance. There was a great potluck supper and a discussion on trail work and events they would like to do this season. Officers were elected for the new 2013 season and include: President Roger Hewitt, Vice President Larry Bull, Treasurer Joyce Boynton, Secretary Joyce Boynton, Trail Master Donnie Hewitt and Assistant Trail Master Joe Nadeau.
All ATV trails are posted with Mud Season closure signs and the ATV Club hopes to have the trails open on May 15. Please obey the trail closures.
The Castle Hill Road access route has been granted. This section of roadway is around four-tenths of a mile and goes from the Mapleton trail crossing which is by the Washburn boat landing and heads to the South Wade Road. This access will allow Washburn trails to connect to Ashland once Ashland finalizes their part of the Trail. The MDOT has requested ATVers must ride on the pavement and not ride the dirt shoulder on the Castle Hill Road to prevent erosion. You must also travel with the flow of traffic and up to traffic speed. If an ATV is involved in a crash or does not obey the rules, MDOT will close the access route. So please use caution. The MDOT will be placing signs on the roadway very soon. There will be an announcement when the Ashland club has finalized their trail route.
Maine’s 2013 ATV maps are in and will be available at the Perham, Wade and Washburn town offices, Country Farms Market and Whites Service of Washburn, and in the map box outside the Washburn clubhouse on Gould Street and in the map box at the Rest-a-bit along route105 (once the trails are open). Stapled inside each map is a Washburn club application and club business card.
The next Washburn ATV Club meeting will be held on Thursday, May 2, at the ATV clubhouse, located on Gould Street in the red barn. Members will be grilling burgers and hotdogs and supper will be starting at 6 p.m. and we ask that you please bring a small side dish or dessert. Meeting will follow at 6:30 p.m. Members will be planning a trail cleanup day and other trail work activities and planning the first club ride.

Bookmark contest winners
Many students in grades 1-8 participated in the Aroostook Right to Read bookmark contest. Classroom winners were chosen, then placed in the following grade clusters: K-2, grades 3-5 and 6-8. Those bookmarks were placed before very qualified judges and winners were chosen to have their bookmarks published for our school. Here are the results: Allysa Shackett won for the K-2 division; Brooke Blackstone is the winner for grades 3-5; and Mariah Davis is top artist for the 6-8 division. Congratulations and all of the students at WDES are pleased to have received your published works of art!
Destination Imagination
On Saturday, April 6, Washburn District School had four teams compete in the Destination Imagination State Championship in Orono. The High School Level Team “Disaster Strikes” won second place in the Change in Reality challenge. The High School Level Team “Wild NorEasters” won third place in the challenge In Disguise. Washburn also had a Middle Level Team who competed in the Change in Reality challenge and an Elementary Team who competed in the In Disguise challenge.
Story Hour
On March 28, Ms. Sines’s first grade class from Washhurn Elementary School attended a Beatrix Potter Story Hour at the Washburn Memorial Library, where Peter Rabbit and his antics were a central theme. The children participated in a reading of several Beatrix Potter books including, “The Complete Adventures of Peter Rabbit.” The children also participated in a rabbit-themed craft activity as well. All had a great time!
PAYT bags available
The Washburn Town Office still has for sale packages of five small orange bags and five blue bags for $8.75, as well as packages of five blue bags for 80 cents.
