CARIBOU — Haney’s Building Specialties was opened in May 1999 in a small 20-foot by 40-foot building located next to Reno’s Restaurant on Sweden Street in Caribou, specializing at the time in kitchen and bath cabinets and garage doors.
In May 2000, owner Troy Haney relocated the business to a brand new building at 236 Van Buren Road. Since the beginning of the business 14 years ago, Haney’s has expanded their operation to include flooring, appliances, foundations, roofing, siding and, most recently, furniture.
“We offer everything from the basement up,” Haney said.
The venture into furniture came from a personal experience when Haney was shopping for a dresser for his daughter to take to college.
“I couldn’t find anything under $500,” Haney explained. “I really didn’t want to have to spend that kind of money, so I started searching for a less expensive option.”
Haney found what he was looking for with Sauder Woodworking Company based out of Ohio.
Sauder manufactures all of its ready-to-assemble furniture in the town of Archbold, where the company was founded in 1934. Haney was impressed with Sauder’s products, which he felt were of a high quality and reasonably priced.
“I knew I couldn’t be the only person in this predicament,” Haney said, “so I decided to start selling the brand here to help people find good, affordable furniture.”
The Sauder line includes shelving units, desks, television cabinets, dressers, headboards and wooden bed frames.
Haney’s sales representative Dan Haines advised the furniture comes with a five-year warranty.
Besides what is available in their showroom, Haney’s carries Sauder catalogs and can order any product for their customers. They will also assemble and deliver the furniture if requested.
On Saturday, Haney’s held an open house to celebrate their 14 years in business and introduce his customers to Sauder’s products.
“We’ve had a good showing,” Haines said. “A lot of people are interested in Sauder. It fits a wide range of people, from couples just starting out to college kids to people with small apartments.”
