Muddin’: Rain and mud combine for a great Adventure Race in Danforth!

Seventy-one took part in the East Grand Adventure Race and Baskahegan Stream canoe race in Danforth last Saturday. Rain was not a deterrent and actually made for better racing conditions. Fifty-six took part in the 20-mile adventure race, which included a compass run and Baskahegan Stream traverse, 10 miles of mountain biking on dirt roads and trails and seven miles of paddling on the Baskahegan Stream.
There were four optional challenges that took minutes off the overall time when completed successfully. These challenges were the mud crawl, two-person crosscut saw, log rolling and climbing wall challenge.     The high school boy’s team of Yuval Boss and Calum Hamilton from Orono High School were repeat and overall winners of the event with a time of 2:25.06
New this year was a 21-mile canoe race from Baskahegan Lake to Bancroft with nine boats and 15 people participating. The race would have been 33 miles long starting in Kossuth but due to windy conditions on Baskahegan Lake, it was shortened to 21 miles. Racers came from as far away as Caribou and Falmouth, many East Grand students and Danforth area adults took part as well. Orono High School came with a good size group as they do each year and did very well.
Many thanks to the Danforth Fire Department, Dirigo Search and Rescue of Old Town and to the 40-plus local volunteers that make this event run smoothly and safe! Generous sponsors include Ski Rack Sports of Bangor, First Wind and the Woodie Wheaton Land Trust.
