Many of the summer people who spend several months here every year are slowly returning to their individual summer homes. Martin and Doris Pankratz arrived from Manhattan, Kan. about three weeks ago and are now settled nicely in their cottage on Pleasant Pond, where they have been for the past 40-some years.

And Alan Chamberlain, who hails from West Point, Va., arrived a few days ago and is getting settled in his cottage on lower Mattawamkeag Lake. His wife, Paula and mother-in-law, Pauline will arrive later in the summer to enjoy our summer season.
On May 25, the Upper Room in Sherman held a very successful food sale at the bandstand there. All the proceeds will go toward the purchase of a new furnace for the Upper Room store as the furnace they had stopped functioning sometime in March and needed to be replaced. The board members thank everyone for helping out with cooking and also buying all the goodies that were sold at the sale.
Last week, in the process of transplanting flowers one sunny day, I was attacked by a horde of black flies and really got chewed by them. But, despite the pesky critters, I got the transplanting done even though it left me with a swollen left eye and many bites on arms and neck. I had forgotten to take any insect repellent, but will use some this week as I will be working outside again.
I am still putting out a bit of sunflower seeds as my gold finch are still around, along with the small wrens and now I think I have a pair of crows as they arrive every afternoon and perch in my big birch tree out back and find food in the grass of my lawn, I think. Threw out some breadcrumbs last night and they gobbled them right up.
Still no deer seen, but I found some deer droppings when I went out mowing. Guess they are still nearby.  And I’m happy to say that I have finally seen a hummingbird at my feeder and this time it was a female so I guess summer has finally arrived.
