MAPLETON NEWS
by Bonnie Landry
In June, family and friends arrived at the Chapman Ridge Runners Snowmobile Club to honor the 50th anniversary of Margaret (Gough) and Leon “Marshall” Savoy of Presque Isle. It is not uncommon to hear about couples celebrating 50 years together; however, what is more uncommon is for four couples in the same family to mark the special occasion!
Margaret is the youngest of the four Gough siblings. Her older siblings Eleanor, Arnold and Alice have all celebrated 50 years of marriage with their spouses! Eleanor married Maynard Savoy, Marshall’s brother. The couple married June 30, 1962 in an outdoor ceremony at 1394 Mapleton Road, now the home of Arnold and Caroline Gough. Eleanor and Maynard have two children and four grandchildren and now reside in Montrose, Colo. Their children had a celebration for them at Lake George, N.Y. last year, which was their honeymoon destination 50 years ago. When the couple came to Portland last summer, they were surprised by another celebration from their family in Maine.
Arnold married Caroline Keach Jan. 22, 1958 by Justice of the Peace, Ralph Christie, at his residence in Mapleton. The couple has three children, four grandchildren and one brand new great-grandchild. Their family held a small gathering to celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2008.
Alice (Gough) Shepard married LeRoy Shepard Aug. 28, 1959 in the Grant Memorial United Methodist Church parsonage on Epworth Street in Presque Isle. The couple has two children and two grandchildren. When they marked their 50th anniversary, they were surprised with a potluck celebration organized by family and friends.
This May Margaret (Gough) and Leon “Marshall” Savoy marked their 50th anniversary. They were married May 31, 1963 at the State Road Advent Christian Church parsonage. According to Margaret, they had a very small ceremony, only seven in attendance, counting her and Marshall. So, when she was approached by a couple of family members about how she wished to celebrate their 50th anniversary this year, she agreed that a party would be a great idea, given they had such a small wedding. The party itself was not a surprise; however, the couple was surprised by the attendance of Margaret’s sister, Eleanor, and her husband, Maynard, from Colorado!
Margaret also shared that each Gough sibling has surpassed the number of years their parents, Herbert and Maude, were married. When their father passed away, their parents had been married for 29, nearly 30 years. Margaret asked that I was sure to mention that her husband’s name is Leon, but he goes by “Marshall.” During their wedding ceremony, she asked the minister, “Do I have to call him Leon?” She recalled the minister simply saying, “If you want it to be legal, you do!” Congratulations to all the couples for reaching this amazing milestone!

Rec soccer is back
The Mapleton Rec Department has started taking registrations for rec soccer. Space is still available and signups will continue until Aug. 16 at the Town Office. The program will begin Wednesday, Aug. 28 and run until Oct. 3.
Groups will be for students in pre-K to kindergarten, grades 1-3, and 4-6. The program cost is $20 per child/$50 max per family for residents and $30 per child/$80 max per family for non-residents.
Pre-K-kindergarten children will play Tuesdays and Thursdays, children in grades 1-3 will play Tuesdays and Thursdays; and children in grades 4-6 will play Mondays and Wednesdays.
For scheduling purposes, these days are the opposite days children that would be playing for Presque Isle Rec, so families are encouraged to participate in both programs!
Staff is working hard to keep this affordable for families, and encourage children to come out and participate.
“Strong programs are fueled by good participation and strong support from families in the community,” said recreation director Jake Graham. “We would love for everyone to come together to help us make this a great program and provide an activity to keep kids active!”
