AUGUSTA — S.W. Cole Engineering Inc. of Bangor has acquired Summit CMT, a construction materials testing subsidiary, from CES Inc., a Brewer-based engineering, sciences and surveying firm. Summit CMT is operated from offices in Augusta and Lewiston.
CES will retain Summit Environmental Consultants, which it acquired earlier this year, and will continue to operate in Lewiston. Summit CMT staff will move to S. W. Cole offices in Augusta and Gray and will operate under the parent company name, S.W. Cole Engineering Inc., which provides construction materials testing and geotechnical engineering services.
According to Bob Chaput, senior vice president of S.W. Cole, Darrell Gilman, manager of Summit CMT, and all CMT staff will be retained and will continue serving Summit CMT clients. Chaput noted that the acquisition brings S.W. Cole Engineering Inc.’s staff to about 95 employees.
The Bangor-based firm, founded in 1979, has seven branch offices, including one in Caribou. The firm’s services include geotechnical engineering, construction materials testing and geoenvironmental services.
S.W. Cole’s offices all have laboratories that provide physical testing of concrete, soil, aggregates and asphalt. The firm’s technicians provide special inspections and field testing of construction materials for projects that include buildings, roads and bridges, infrastructure such as water and sewer projects, industrial projects, wind power transmission projects and manufacturing plants throughout New England.
Denis St. Peter, president of CES Inc., noted that the Brewer-based company, founded in 1978, has over 70 employees with six offices in Maine, including Presque Isle. The firm’s services include civil engineering, environmental consulting and surveying.
“The acquisition of Summit Environmental Consultants has been a tremendous addition to our company that supplements our environmental staff and capabilities and expands our service area to southern Maine,” St. Peter said. “Even though we did not plan on selling the CMT division, this agreement allows CES to better focus on our core services and still accomplishes our goals of expanding our service area and improving our core services to our clients. It also aligns the exceptionally talented and reputable Summit CMT staff with a company that is a leader in the CMT industry, providing them more opportunities and support to accomplish their career goals.”
