SHPT Stephen Barrey OBAmerican Flag ColorWESTON & MARS HILL – Stephen Belyea Barrey, 85, joined his heavenly family, Tuesday evening, September 3, 2013, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born August 17, 1928, in Mars Hill, to Malcom T. and Millicent (Belyea) Barrey.
He was a graduate of Aroostook Central Institute (ACI), class of 1945. Upon graduation, Steve moved to Lynn, Mass., and was employed by G.E. Corporation as an Electrical Test Engineer. The call of duty came to him in 1950 to serve his country during the Korean Conflict and he enlisted in the United States Army and served on the front lines in transportation. Upon being honorably discharged in 1952, he returned to G. E. to resume his career. In 1960, he was called to move his family to Pasadena, CA, and became employed by Jet Propulsion Laboratories Inc. He was particularly proud of his accomplishments, being directly involved with the early days of the Pioneer Space Program; his skills were used in the first three space missions to the moon. Later, he relocated back east and finished his career with G.E. and Westport of Orange, CT. Steve was also very well known to his many friends he leaves behind as a great story teller. He could hold the attention of most by telling elaborate and (mostly true) stories!
He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Ardis A. Barrey of Weston; two sons, Christopher and Thomas; one daughter, Donna; eight grandchildren, several nieces and nephews; he also leaves behind a brother, Nathan and his wife, Dorothy.
There will be a Celebration of Life Memorial Service at 1 p.m., September 21, 2013, at Duncan Funeral Home, 8 Main St., Mars Hill, with his Pastor and brother-in-law, Rev. Richard McLaughlin and Rex McLaughlin officiating. There will be a time of fellowship and food at the United Baptist Church following the service.  His wife and family would like to express their extended thank you to the nurses and staff at Gardner’s Health Care Facility in Houlton for all their wonderful care and support while Steve was there. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Stephen’s memory to a charity of one’s choice. Online condolences may be expressed at www.duncan-graves.com.
