The Houlton Parks & Recreation Department will be offering the following programs to the youth.
Junior high dance
A junior high dance for grades 7-8 will be held on Friday, Nov. 1 from 8-10:30 p.m.
Cost will be $5 per student. Rec policies are that once you arrive at the dance, you must stay. If you leave there is no re-entry. Chaperones will be provided and music will be by Phoenix Crockett. All monies will go to the Community Playground Project.
Youth basketball
There will be three youth basketball programs offered starting in December.
Little Hoopsters is for grade K and will be held each Saturday, Dec. 7, 14 and 21. Time to choose are 9 a.m., 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. Cost is $25 per child and Rob Smith will be the instructor. This is an introductory basketball program and the staff will work on fun dribbling and passing skills with a parent demonstration on the last Saturday. Registration is required by Nov. 15.
Tykes Basketball is for grades 1-2 and will begin the week of Dec. 2. Registrations can be dropped off at the rec center until Nov. 15.
Peewee Basketball is for grades 3-4 and will begin the week of Dec. 2. Registrations can be dropped off at the rec center until Nov. 15.
Red Cross Babysitters Course
The Red Course Babysitters Course will be held on Saturday, Nov. 16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the rec center. Youth between the ages of 11-15 years are encouraged to take this course. The course will give the participant the opportunity to get the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to take care of infants and young children. Cost is $50 per participant. The department must have a minimum of six participants to hold this class, but will take up to 12 youth. To register, call the recreation department at 532-1310 by Nov. 12. Youth will need to bring a bagged lunch and drink on the day of the training.
Parents & Tots
Parent & Tots is held weekly each Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30-10 a.m. This unstructured time is for parents to bring their tots to the rec center for play in the gym. This is free and is a great time to set up play dates for your children.
Walkers Welcomed!
With the weather taking a turn for the colder, make plans to come walk in the rec center gym on Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This free activity is a great way to stay in shape during the winter.
