PATTEN – Christine M. Shorey died peacefully at home surrounded by her family Nov. 9, 2013. She was born June 2, 1939, in Patten, to Henry Vivian and Mildred Boynton Grant.
She graduated from Patten Academy in 1957 and then married her high school sweetheart, Donald Shorey. They recently celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary. She started her working career picking potatoes, and then joined her sister, Ann, at the Patten Drugstore. She then took over her mother’s job as librarian at the Veteran’s Memorial Library in Patten until her retirement.
Don and Christine added two children to their family, David and Rachel. Their door was always open and they had several other “children” join them over the years. She was a mother and grandmother to many. The house was always full of love and laughter. Her family and those she considered family were what she cherished most. The happiest times were spent with them. In later years, she truly enjoyed her grandchildren; reading to them, playing with them, and swimming in the pool.
Chris was an avid outdoorswoman. She loved camping, hunting, and ice fishing, even having her own shack. She also loved sports and spent time coaching softball and basketball. She also served her community by being a Cub Scout leader, serving on several boards, volunteering at the schools, and especially being the “Kitchen Boss” for Bean Day at the Lumberman’s Museum. She was an avid reader, loved to lay in the sun, and enjoyed an ice cold Coke.
She is survived by her devoted and loving husband, Donald; son, David and his wife, Nancy, of Pittsfield; and daughter, Rachel and her husband, Ron Campbell, of Patten. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Nicholas Shorey and his wife, Megan, and their children, Ava-Jo and Brady of Oakland, Aaron Shorey and his wife, Carianne, of Longview, Texas, Cody Morse and fiancée, Caitlin Duffy, and daughter, Nicole of Benedicta, and Bailey and Savannah Campbell of Patten; one brother, Donald Grant of Stetson; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother, Leon; her sister, Ann and husband, Bart Merry; a special sister-in-law, Gayle; and great-grandson, Tanner.
A memorial service will be held noon Saturday, Nov. 16, at Bowers Funeral Home, Island Falls. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Veteran’s Memorial Library, Patten, ME 04765. For an online memory book and to leave condolences please visit
