Cary Library Corner

Editor’s note: The following article is a synopsis written by staff members and volunteers of the Cary Public Library highlighting one of the suggested reading books, as determined by their staff.
Cary Library has many books on knitting and crocheting, those fiber threads which make such charming items, but a basic version was needed to begin. The staff found “Hands On Knitting” by Wendy Baker.

Her illustrations are clear along with explanations and step-by-step notes. She includes fun stuff such as pom-poms, tassels, fringes, braids and appliqué. In the Children’s section, # j746.43  Bak; a good find.
Then we discovered Susie O’Reilly’s “Knitting and Crocheting,” which starts with a brief history of these crafts. Look for the picture of the lady knitting and walking while she carries a load of fuel on her back.     Also interesting, is the section on development of needles for these crafts. This book has nice pictures of different patterns useful for creating personal designs. Again, in the upstairs Children’s section # j746.43 O’Re.
The staff understands there are eight-year-olds who are trying this needle work and having a ball (pun intended!) with newer yarns available locally. So, young or old, have fun being creative.
The Cary Public Library is open Monday-Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call 532-1302.
