May snowstorm delays planting — Our farmers are hoping for a late fall this year to make up for the lateness of the spring. Planting and farm work all over Aroostook have been greatly delayed on account of the cold weather. With a snowstorm the 15th of May, matters look rather discouraging to the average farmer.
New school building for Mapleton — Mapleton is to have a new high school building as the result of a special town meeting. The building will be placed on a lot adjoining the garage lot, which has been bought of L. B. Jordan.

CHS commencement activities — A masque entitled, “When Marble Speaks,” is to be presented at the Caribou High School commencement exercises in June. A chorus will render musical selections and a number of students as dancers will also participate.
Sponsorship sought for Caribou Clovers Baseball Club — A meeting of all citizens and ball players interested in the sponsorship of the Caribou Clovers Baseball Club is scheduled for Friday at the G. W. P. Jerrard Co. office with Waldo Lowney. Aroostook towns of Presque Isle, Fort Fairfield, Mars Hill, Fort Kent and Limestone have already signified their intention of entering teams in the Northern Maine League.

Caribou gets Sugar Beet Factory — Widespread speculation that the Great Western Sugar Company plant would be located elsewhere ended today (Tuesday) when an announcement from the firm’s headquarters in Denver, Colo., confirmed the Grimes Mill area in Caribou as the site for the $20 million factory that is to be in operation by fall of 1966.
Chamber to crown ‘Miss Sugar Beet’— The Caribou Chamber of Commerce will crown a “Miss Caribou Sugar Beet” on June 22, it was reported Tuesday morning. In tribute to the new sugar beet industry in the county, the chamber announced that its 1964 “Miss Caribou” would be tagged “Miss Caribou Sugar,” but since then a representative of Great Western Sugar Company requested that the name “Miss Caribou Sugar Beet” be used in order that the contest winner would be properly identified with beet sugar and not cane sugar.

Madawaska River Run breaks records — The largest number of entrants ever in the nine-year history of the annual Madawaska River Run sponsored by the Stockhold Perkins-Plourde American Legion Post was recorded Sunday when 48 canoes left the starting point at Perham Stream Bridge. Serving as registration and starting officials were Gale Anderson and Dave Sterris. Time recorders at the finish line were Gordon Sund and Al Johnson.
