Additional honor parts listed for Southern Aroostook Community School Class of 2014

Editor’s Note: The following students were inadvertently left out of an article highlighting Southern Aroostook Community School’s honor parts in last week’s edition of The Houlton Pioneer Times. Valedictorian Brooke Morgan Lilley and salutatorian Jessica Dawn Tucker were featured last week. The newspaper regrets the omission.
Jonathan Porter, principal at Southern Aroostook Community School, has announced the first and second honor essayists for the Class of 2014.
Shelby Dawn Cummings, first honor essayist, is the daughter of Kevin and Mable Cummings. She was president of the senior class; is a member of the National Honor Society; was vice-president of junior class. She has been active in Dollars for Scholars.

Cummings has been very active in community events, volunteering her time at benefit suppers/ auctions, coaching tee ball and peewee basketball, youth group, babysitting for ACAP program. She has also been manager of both varsity soccer and varsity basketball, has tutored in the After School program and was a participant if the Breast Cancer Awareness walk.
Cummings honors include Society of Women Engineers Certificate of Merit and she has been on the honor roll throughout high school.
She will attend Husson University in the fall in the Occupational Therapist program.
Mataya Dawn Hartin, second honor essayist, is the daughter of Craig and Tammy Hartin. She has been very active in sports throughout high school, participating in basketball, soccer and softball where she has been captain of all sports and also played YBOA basketball. She was chosen to participate in the All-Star Senior basketball game and was also named Aroostook Scholar athlete. Her co-curricular activities include two years in the drama club, Dollars for Scholars, a member of the band and prom committeee, as well as being vice president of the senior class. Hartin is a member of the National Honor Society and attended Dirigo Girls State.
Hartin’s community service includes doing concessions for Island Falls Rec. department, Summerfest activities, American Red Cross blood drive, Share the Warmth clothing drive, SACS soccer camp, Bridge to Hope Breast Cancer Awareness walk, Pink Out and Locks of Love. Hartin also has two years of employment at Vacationland Estates and has held summer jobs at both Jerry’s Thriftway and River Café.
She received a four-year Merit Scholarship from UMO for $16,000. She also was the recipient of the First Wind scholarship.
Hartin will attend University of Maine at Orono in the fall with a major in nursing.
