• The hobos who have been employed on the railroad all summer have received their pay and departed hence.
• Professor W. P. Hamilton was unable to attend to his work in the high school Monday due to a severe cold which was later determined to be measles.

100 Years Ago-Oct. 29, 1914

• House for sale on Vaughn Street — The advertisement reads: As I have decided to live on my farm, I wish to sell my house on Vaughn St. which is new and in splendid repair containing fifteen rooms and a bath. It has electric lights, furnace heat, a flush closet in the basement and is connected with the sewer; has a fine wide piazza, good woodshed and small stable. E. E. Walts, Caribou, Maine.
• News from Fort Fairfield — Bert Webster has bought a house from Spergon Everett of Presque Isle St. Henry Rogers and family will move this week from Syndicate to their new home. A very pleasant dance was held at Rob Tapley’s last Thursday night.

75 Years Ago-Nov. 2, 1939

• Town offices moved — Town agent, Grover M. Hardison announced Wednesday that the new municipal building would receive its first tenants today. The charity department will occupy the basement while the administrative offices are located on the High St. floor.
• Movie classics at the Gayety in Van Buren — The new Gayety Theatre in Van Buren will feature The Wizard of Oz, starring Judy Garland and Frank Morgan, on Sunday and Monday, Nov. 12 and 13. Coming soon: Mr. Smith Goes to Washington with Jimmy Stewart and Bringing Up Baby starring Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant.

50 Years Ago-Oct. 29, 1964

• Gahagan senior class president — Class elections have been held at Caribou High School with the following results: Senior Class, Hayes Gahagan president; Barbara Foote, vice president; Toni Disy, secretary; and Gerry Grindle, treasurer.
• Cinematic scare tactics — The following movies are being shown during the week of Halloween: at Caribou Theatre, Godzilla vs. the Thing and Voyage to the End of the Universe; at the Powers Theatre, Castle of Blood, Hercules in a Haunted World and The Earth Dies Screaming.

• One-day surgery unit at Cary — In early December, Cary Medical Center will open a new one-day surgery unit, reflecting the major impact of surgical procedures that now may be done so the patient is discharged on the same day.
• New car battery recycling law — Bring your old car battery with you when you go to buy a new one because retailers are now required to accept them in trade. They are also required to collect a $10 deposit from customers who come in empty handed.
