Marine Corps League begins membership drive
CARIBOU, Maine — The Meo Bosse Detachment 1414, Marine Corps League is undergoing its annual recruitment drive.
The Marine Corps League is the only congressionally chartered United States Marine Corps-related veterans’ organization in the United States. Its Congressional Charter was approved by the 75th U.S. Congress and signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on Aug. 4, 1937. The organization credits its founding in 1923 to legendary Marine Corps Commandant John A. Lejeune.
Members of the Marine Corps League join together in camaraderie and fellowship for the purpose of preserving the traditions and promoting the interests of the United States Marine Corps, banding together those who are now serving in the United States Marine Corps and those who have been honorably discharged from the service that they may effectively promote the ideals of American freedom and democracy, voluntarily aiding and rendering assistance to all Marines and former Marines and to their widows and orphans; and to perpetuate the history of the United States Marine Corps and by fitting acts to observe the anniversaries of historical occasions of particular interest to Marines.
Marines who have served at least 90 days and earned the Eagle, Globe and Anchor; Marine Reservists with no less than 90 Reserve Retirement Credit Points; U.S. Navy Corpsmen who have trained with Marine FMF Units in excess of 90 days and earned the Marine Corps Device (clasp) worn on the service ribbon and those who earn the warfare device authorized for FMF Corpsmen shall be eligible for regular membership in The Marine Corps League.
Additionally, some Korean War era Marines who were ordered to active duty prior to completing recruit training or officers’ training, and subsequently received an honorable discharge prior to completion of 90 days active or reserve duty, may be eligible for regular membership.
Prospective members must provide a DD214 or Certificate of Discharge, indicating “Honorable Service.” General discharge under honorable conditions is acceptable. Dues are $35 per year.
The Detachment meets the third Saturday of each month at 2 p.m. in the Chan Center at Cary Medical Center.
