HOULTON, Maine — Four local groups are benefiting thanks to financial support from Vital Pathways.
The town of Ludlow, the Pregnancy Care Center in Presque Isle and Adopt-a-Block of Aroostook will receive funds from the non-profit group.
Ludlow received a grant of $1,000 to repair lighting problems in a room inside its town office that is used for community activities.
The Pregnancy Care Center, based in Presque Isle, received $334 for a “Touch of Life” set used to show the stages of a fetus’ life cycle.
Adopt-A-Block of Aroostook received $350 to expand playground equipment at Military Street Baptist Church, and will use the funds to purchase a “Gym Dandy Teeter Totter” and a tether ball.
The non-profit group also presented $900 to the Houlton Lacrosse Club to help sponsor a summer clinic for 24 youths in the greater Houlton area.
Vital Pathways was formed in 1994 when Houlton was chosen one of five Maine sites to be designated as a “Healthy Community.”
According to the group’s website, Vital Pathways employs a broad definition of health which goes beyond medical, to include education, environment, technological and economic development, and recreation.
“Since 1994 Vital Pathways has developed and supported the growth of healthy communities in southern Aroostook. Some of our major programs include food campaigns for hungry children and maintaining healthy public spaces within the community such as parks, trails and playgrounds.”
Vital Pathways is based in Houlton and serves 11 towns in Aroostook County. The board of 12 meets once a month and is a 501(c)(3) organization.
