Shires continue unbeaten streak

The unseasonably hot weather that has gripped The County this past week has also resulted in a streak of hot play for local girls soccer squads.

Sporting a perfect 8-0 record on the season, the Houlton girls have a comfortable grip atop the Class C North standings as of Tuesday morning. The Shires have just two games this week, hosting Mattanawcook Academy Wednesday and traveling to Orono Saturday for a huge Heal Point-worthy contest with the Red Riots.

In Class D North, Southern Aroostook (4-2) is seventh, while Hodgdon (5-3-1) is close behind in eighth and Katahdin (2-3-1) is 10th. East Grand (0-6) has played competitively in a number of recent games, but is still seeking its first win of the year. The Vikings are in 19th as of Tuesday morning.

The following is a recap of games played through Monday.

Hodgdon girls 3, Shead 2 — At Eastport Monday, Sabra Scott had two goals and Emma Drew added one as the Hawks edged Shead. Maddi Merritt had an assist for the Hawks, who improve to  5-

3-1 on the season. Shead drops to 3-4.

Woodland at East Grand — At Danforth Monday,

Washburn girls 2, Katahdin 1 — In a game played at Presque Isle Monday, Kassie Farley scored two first-half goals to set the tone for the Beavers’ win over the Cougars. Carly Bragg made five saves on eight shots for 4-5-2 Washburn.

Erin Lake scored 30 seconds into the second half on a penalty kick for Katahdin (2-3-1). Natalie Rickards collected 10 saves on 18 shots.

Houlton 4, George Stevens Academy 0 — At Blue Hill Saturday, Kolleen Bouchard and Mia Hanning each had 2 goals.  Aspen Flewelling and Sam Condon each assists.  Tessa Solomon made four saves on seven shots.

Southern Aroostook at Central Aroostook — At Mars Hill Saturday,

Hodgdon girls 3, East Grand 2 — At Danforth Friday, Hodgdon improved to 4-3-1 on the season with the win over the Vikings. East Grand dropped to 0-6. Individual results were not reported.

Ashland 11, Katahdin 0 — In Ashland Thursday, Amber Chasse and Morgan Doughty each scored three goals and posted two assists to lead the Hornets (8-0) to victory over the Cougars (2-3-1).

Willow Hall and Jamie Poulin contributed two goals each and Shelby Stolze added one for Ashland. Meagan Cote and Ava Cameron combined to make two saves on two shots.

Nikita Keim made 10 saves on 31 shots for 2-3-1 Katahdin of Stacyville.

Southern Aroostook 8, Shead 0 — At Eastport  Wednesday, Southern Aroostook defeated Shead as Kassidy Mathers scored the hat trick with three goals. Emma Nadeau added two goals, while Kylie Vining, Kacy Daggett and Hannah Brown each

had solo goals.

Sydney Brewer made two saves on two shots in net for the Warriors, who improved to 5-1 with the victory. Shead falls to 3-3 with the loss.

Hodgdon girls 4, East Grand 1 — At Hodgdon Sept. 19, Hawks Emma Drew and Sidney Crane each had two goals to spark Hodgdon to victory Tuesday afternoon. Maddi Merritt and Sidney Howell both added assists for the 3-3-1 Hawks. Autumn Ganzel made 11 saves on 12 shots

Haleigh Shay scored a second-half goal for East Grand (0-5). Jordan Cowger stopped 24 of 28 shots.
