Boone to compete in state golf championships

LINCOLN, Maine — For the second consecutive year, Libby Boone has qualified for the state schoolgirl individual golf championships.

Boone, a junior at Presque Isle High School and member of the Carlisle golf team, shot a 99 at the Penobscot Valley Conference Championships at JaTo Highlands in Lincoln Thursday. Girls scoring 100 or below earned the right to advance to the Oct. 14 state tourney at Natanis Golf Club’s Arrowhead Course in Vassalboro.

Her coach, Marc Weeks, said that after Boone shot a 52 on the front nine, which he said is the easier side of the course, she settled in and shot a 47 for the final nine.

“She struggled on the front as she was very nervous and her adrenaline caused her to hit several approach shots and putts long early in her round, which created problems,” Weeks said.

After playing bogey golf on holes 10 through 15, Weeks said Boone carded double bogeys on holes 16 and 17, giving her a total of 95 strokes heading into the par-4 18th, which is the second-most difficult hole at JaTo.

“We had spent a lot of practice time working on bump-and-run shots from around the green and as it turns out, she was five yards off the green in two, then executed a bump and run perfectly and sank the short putt for a par,” Weeks said.

Mackenzie Plourde of Penobscot Valley High School in Howland was the other girls’ qualifier as she came in with a round of 94.

Boone also had an opportunity to qualify at the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Championships at Natanis Tuesday, but shot a 102 on the Tomahawk Course and missed the cut by two strokes.

Last year at the state event, Boone carded a 104, which was good for 28th place overall.

The Carlisle golf team concluded its season Tuesday at the KVAC Class A competition, finishing 13th out of 14 teams, with only the top five moving on to the Oct. 7 team state championship tourney at Natanis.
