County commissioners OK hiring of two new deputy sheriffs

SINCLAIR, Maine — Aroostook County Commissioners Thursday approved the hiring of two new full-time deputy sheriffs, filling two recent vacancies.

Jesse Belanger, who is currently with the Aroostook Emergency Management Agency, will be assigned to the northern patrol area. He will start on Oct. 21. Jonathan Desmarais of Tennessee, is expected to start his patrolling of the southern area of the county on Nov. 4.

Sheriff Darrell Crandall also nominated, and commissioners approved the hiring of two part-time dispatchers, Kaitlin Hannigan of Houlton and Shannon Hubacher of Presque Isle.

Commissioners also approved the hiring of Josh Capozzi of Houlton as a part-time corrections officer/cook.

In addition, the board approved Aroostook EMA Director Darren Woods’ recommendation of Shaun Merrill to fill a vacant assistant planner position. Merrill, a 2011 graduate of Morse High School in Bath and currently a student at the University of Maine at Fort Kent, had previously completed an internship at EMA.

The EMA planning position is funded for three years through Homeland Security monies.

Commissioners also approved the hiring of Jenna Swallow as a deputy register of probate.

In a brief election prior to the start of the commissioner’s meeting, Tony Ramelli and Bruce Laveway were re-elected to three-year terms on the Sinclair Sanitary district.
