LINCOLN, Maine — The Caribou wrestling team improved to 4-5 on the season after defeating Calais, 42-36, and Penobscot Valley High School, 66-17, and falling to the host Mattanawcook Lynx, 48-36, in a match held Wednesday.

The Vikings are now ranked No. 8 out of 22 teams in the Maine Principals’ Association Class B North region.

“We are slowly getting better and teams that are beating us and ranked ahead of us are not that much better than us,” said Caribou coach James “Chico” Hernandez.

The coach is looking for more improvement from wrestlers in the 152- to 195-pound weight divisions “if we are going to make our move into the top five in the conference.”

Cory Jandreau and Evan Michaud are senior captains who continue to lead the way for the Vikes. Jandreau went 3-0 in the latest competition and Michaud went 3-1.

Jandreau is now only two victories away from his 100th varsity career win and could reach the milestone during Saturday’s tournament in Caribou. Michaud is only 16 wins away from his 100th.

“In my eight years of coaching, this will be my first time coaching not only one 100-win wrestler but two in the same season,” Hernandez said. “I’m very proud of both and what they have accomplished.”ng
