Bartley and Jandreau lead way in freestyle championships

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Max Bartley of Presque Isle and Isabelle Jandreau of Madawaska captured individual victories at the Aroostook League’s championship meet in Nordic skiing, held at the Nordic Heritage Center Wednesday, Feb. 14. 

Bartley won the five-kilometer boys’ race in 14 minutes and 24 seconds, topping a field of 31 skiers, while Jandreau was first in the girls’ competition with a time of 16:31. Twenty nine girls participated.

The Caribou girls and Fort Kent boys claimed the team titles. For girls, Fort Kent was second and Ashland third. On the boys’ side, Caribou was the runner-up.

The boys’ top-10 included: first, Bartley; second, Niko Naranja of Fort Kent, 15:08; third, Alec Cyr of Caribou, 15:43; fourth, Sam Johnson of Fort Kent, 15:57; fifth, Emerson Duplissie-Cyr of Caribou, 16:15; sixth, Evan Desmond of Caribou, 16:20; seventh, Reece Voisine of Fort Kent, 16:31; eighth, Dakota Yakel of Caribou, 16:43; ninth, Garrett Morneault of Presque Isle, 16:56; and 10th, Miguel Sanclemente of Fort Kent, 17:06.

James Cyr lead MSSM by placing 18th in 18:07 and Owen McLean was Ashland’s only competitor. He placed 30th.

Making up the girls’ top 10 were: first, Jandreau; second, Izzy Jackson of Presque Isle, 17:15; third, Kirsten Main of Central Aroostook, 18:24; fourth, Ciara Richards of Caribou, 18:42; fifth, Dolcie Tanguay of MSSM, 18:48; sixth, Abigail Wimmer of Caribou, 19:25; seventh, Jessica Halsey of Fort Fairfield, 19:31; eighth, Macy Wakem of Caribou, 20:04; ninth, Willow Hall of Ashland 20:07; and 10th, Kassandra Nelson of Ashland, 20:41.

The Class B and C state Nordic ski meets will be held Wednesday, Feb. 21 and Thursday, Feb. 22, at the Fort Kent Outdoor Center.
