HOULTON, Maine — Town councilors on Monday evening accepted a donation from a local high school basketball star that will benefit the Houlton Recreation Department. The councilors also accepted a couple of bids to help ready the streets for summer.
During the brief meeting on Monday evening, councilors accepted the grant donation of $1,000 to the Parks and Recreation Department from Kolleen Bouchard.
Gatorade named her Gatorade Maine Girls Basketball Player of the Year in March, awarding her $1,000 from the Gatorade Play It Forward program to donate to a national or local youth sports organization of her choosing.
Marie Carmichael, recreation director, said Tuesday that the department needs “new soccer goals for the youth program.”
“Kolleen was part of the soccer team and she won youth championships,” Carmichael said. “It was very nice of her to think of us and it shows her character. The money will buy one set because they are very expensive.”
In other business, the council accepted a bid of $8,761.46 from Jackett Enterprises of Houlton for hand-placed pavement markings throughout the town. The funds were budgeted in the 2018 public works department account.
Councilors also accepted the low bid of $11,312.29 from Fine Line Pavement Striping of Hermon, for machine-placed pavement markings throughout the town.
They tabled a proposal to have Town Manager William D. MacDonald be appointed a representative for the Maine Service Centers Coalition, however, saying that they did not have enough information about the organization. MacDonald told councilors he would gather more information on the coalition and bring it back to them at their next meeting, which is scheduled for May 14.
