Owl baseball team to compete in conference tourney

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball team is the No. 7 seed in the City University of New York Athletic Conference postseason tournament, being played at Purchase College in Purchase, N.Y., and the College of Staten Island in Staten Island, N.Y., Thursday through Saturday.

The Owls own a 4-27 record and are 1-9 in conference play. They are the lowest seeded team in the tourney. They take on No. 2 John Jay College of New York, N.Y.,, which has a 13-15 record (6-4 in the conference), in the first-round game at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Purchase College.

Ryan Sanderson leads the UMPI squad with a .327 batting average. Matt Curry is next at .312. Curry and Sanderson are first and second, respectively, in RBIs with 17 and 15. Saul Nunez has a team-leading three home runs, while Bradley Patterson is tops in stolen bases with 10.

Curry is the top pitcher with 35 strikeouts in 40-1/3 innings and a 5.13 earned run average. He owns an 0-7 record.

Roger Stinson is the Owls’ interim head coach.
