Owl baseball team ousted in conference tourney

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball team lost a close game in the opening round of the City University of New York Athletic Conference postseason tournament played Thursday at Purchase College in Purchase, N.Y. 

John Jay College scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to break a deadlock and come away with the walk-off victory by a score of 8-7.

The Owls trailed 4-0 after an inning but then scored seven unanswered runs in the second and third innings to take a three-run lead.

Will Stinson and Bradley Patterson scored unearned runs in the second before UMPI added five runs in the third, two coming on a double by Will Stinson. Matt Curry, Ryan Sanderson and Spencer also had RBI hits in the inning.

John Jay came back to score a run in the fourth and then two in the fifth to tie the game before winning it in the ninth on an RBI single by Steven Catuogno.

Curry started on the mound for the Owls and went two innings but was pulled after surrendering two first-inning home runs, three other hits and four earned runs. Tyler McLaughlin allowed two earned runs during his 4-2/3 innings of relief. Frank Nunez and Saul Nunez pitched later in the game and Saul Nunez took the loss.

John Jay’s Danny Wynne came on in relief of starter Sean Napier in the third inning and went the rest of the way, holding UMPI scoreless on three hits. He struck out five and walked only two in 6-1/3 innings.

Stinson went 3 for 4 and Matt Cauchon had a pair of hits for the Owls.

The Owls finished the season with a 4-28 record. They were the seventh seed in the tourney and John Jay, a New York City-based team, was No. 2 and improved to 14-15 with the victory.
