FORT KENT, Maine — A woman shopping at Rite Aid in town on Wednesday afternoon came across a small ornate, silver-colored urn containing ashes on one of the shelves.
Sandy Tagget of Fort Kent showed the urn to Rite Aid management who told her to bring it to the Fort Kent Police Department, according to Chief Tom Pelletier.
So Tagget took the urn, which is smaller than a soda can and easily fit into Pelletier’s hand, to the police department at about 3:15 p.m. that day.
Pelletier said Thursday the urn clearly contains ashes, but he can’t say for sure whether the ashes are the remains of a human being or possibly a pet.
The chief said he is at a loss to figure out how the urn wound up on a shelf at Rite Aid.
“We have no idea where this came from,” he said.
To try to find the urn’s owner, he posted a note on the department’s Facebook page.
“Has anyone lost an urn? A small one was found at Rite Aid,” reads the post. “It will be here at the police station.”
Pelletier asks that anyone with information that might help reunite the urn with its owner contact police at (207) 834-5678.
